2021 Return to Play Info
The Saanich Lacrosse Executive is committed to delivering lacrosse programming for the 2021 season. The principles behind this season are: keeping players healthy and active, building players’ love for having a lax stick in their hand, and finding the silver lining in the current situation.
To achieve this, the parents, players, coaches, managers, and all of our amazing volunteers will need to bring a sense of positivity to the sport and focus on what we can do, rather than what we are missing from past lacrosse seasons.
The cancellation of the 2020 season was disappointing for the players, parents, spectators and all of the volunteers that make our lacrosse community special. The 2021 season will look and feel different from what we have come to expect for lacrosse. The BC Lacrosse Association is voting on a motion to cancel all tournaments and the provincial championships. We are currently not able to host games, as we are under Phase 2 ViaSport restrictions.
As Dr Henry has suggested, the restrictions could be lifted as we see stabilization and a decrease of infection rates, allowing for Phase 3 to be implemented. Phase 3 allows for competition using a cohort model (4 teams with a maximum of 100 players). The Executive is prepared to transition quickly in the event gameplay is possible within the Greater Victoria area. A number of options are being explored to achieve this, and all four associations (JDF, Peninsula, Saanich, Victoria/Esquimalt) are working together to deliver the best lacrosse experience.
The start of the season will see cohorts of players come together for back to the box sessions, with some level of assessment designed to build balanced teams at all divisions. This is not a change for Mini-Tyke to Novice, however it will be for Pee Wee to 16U. The focus at this point will be individual skills and drills. Parents will receive an email indicating the dates, times, location and Covid protocols for these sessions.
The Saanich Lacrosse Return to Play plan is posted on the website so parents are aware of the safety precautions the association is taking while delivering lacrosse. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Andy Stuart at firstname.lastname@example.org BC Lacrosse Association link:
